Solinco Second Look: Marco Trungelliti
There were several shining moments for Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti in the first few months of 2024. He clinched his third Challenger Title in Rwanda. One month later, he made a breakthrough in Barcelona, an ATP 500 event, where he reached the round of 16 by defeating World No. 24 Nicolas Jarry. This year, we’re likely to see him in the qualifying rounds of several Grand Slams.
Becoming a professional tennis player demands years of relentless dedication, raw talent, and the mental strength to overcome setbacks along the way. It’s why tennis is often seen as a lifelong passion and one of the most grueling sports. This idea couldn’t be more true for Marco’s tennis journey that spans over 25 years of pro-level competition.
This year, he’s refocusing on what fuels his competitive drive, drawing from his years of experience on the tour.
Marco has been with Team Solinco for almost as long as he’s been a pro. He began playing with Tour Bite and is now using Confidential. We caught up with him to delve deeper into his life, career, and mindset as he continues his climb to the top.
What was your first introduction to tennis?
My first introduction to tennis was because of my parents. Both of them were playing at our local tennis club, so me and my brothers used to watch them. Our mama was playing with us a lot of the time. Also, we had a wall at the club that was always available to practice on.
Tell us about your tennis journey thus far.
My journey as a tennis player started at a very early age. I left my hometown to practice somewhere else. That’s the main issue in Argentina, if you want to be good in something, you have to move to Buenos Aires (1,000 km from my hometown). I spent around 10 years in Buenos Aires. This nearly ended my career as I was completely tired of traveling within South America and to Europe, back and forth, without the feeling of being at home.
I felt like my career was almost over, so I knew that something had to change in my life to keep playing tennis and to perform better as well. That’s when I decided to move to Europe. After that, my life became easier logistically and travel-wise. My wife helped me a lot. Back then, it was our project as a couple.
How are you feeling coming into this season?
Today, I’m feeling younger than 10 years ago, more mature and more prepared to be playing and performing at my highest level.
What Solinco equipment do you use?
I use Confidential 1.25 mm. We started our partnership with Solinco about 14 years ago. Back then, I was using Tour Bite at the beginning, then switched to Confidential about 5 years ago.
What’s your string tension?
It depends on where I’m playing and under what circumstances, but I usually string it at 21 kg (46 lbs).
Why Solinco?
I’ve now used two types of Solinco strings consistently for 14 years. I have full confidence in my choice. When I reached out to Solinco, KT was there asking for my feedback and suggesting something to fit my playing style.
Solinco consistently delivers great quality and support whenever I need it, and I’m thankful for that. I feel like we are loyal to each other and that is beautiful.
Do you have any role models that you look up to?
I don’t really have a role model in my life. My wife and I make a really good team. That’s probably the most important thing for me, as I build up everything I need from that base or foundation with my wife. Also, I have a great tennis team with people ready to help at any time. I’m exactly where I want to be, surrounded by the people I want to be with.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I hope I can keep playing tennis at a professional level.
What are some highlights from this season?
The best highlight was my trip to Africa with my mum. It was her dream from childhood (and my first time on the continent). To be there with her and to win a Challenger was perfect. I have the best memories from Rwanda, from its people and culture. I wish I can go back some day.
What’s next?
I’m looking forward to having a 12-month calendar without having serious injuries. I want to see where my level is when I’m healthy and I’m working hard maintain my health.
Where can people find you?
I have an Instagram, but I don’t post much. It’s marco.trungelliti.
If you don’t find me there, then I am probably at the mountains with my wife, my son, and my dog.
