Get to Know Andy Johnson – Junior Orange Bowl and Winter Nationals CHAMPION
—
Andrew (Andy) Johnson is the singles Champion of the junior Orange Bowl International in Florida and the USTA Winter Nationals in San Antonio!
The 14-year-old Team Solinco athlete spent the majority of his holidays traveling the country to compete in two of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the world. In the end, the trip was well worth it, with Andy bringing home two singles titles and one doubles title alongside his Team Solinco partner, Tyler Lee, at the Winter Nationals.
Orange Bowl Results
- SINGLES CHAMPION: Andy defeated Gaines 6-3, 6-0 in just over an hour.
During the Orange Bowl in Florida, four days of rain rushed main draw action into a shorter window and cancelled the doubles competition for the first time. Andy, the No. 2 seed, quickly capitalized on his opportunities once match play resumed.
Using his exceptional control and counterpunching skills, Andy reached the final without dropping a set. He defeated Gaines 6-3, 6-0 in just over an hour to achieve his seventh consecutive straight-sets victory.
In a conversation with Collette Lewis, Andy shared that his tournament strategy remained consistent throughout: “It’s been pretty much the same strategy the whole tournament, mix it up, keep him off balance. I stayed very focused and I think that’s why I won this tournament. It’s something to be proud about.”
Winter Nationals Results
A few weeks later, Andy travelled to San Antonio for the Winter Nationals, which he quickly swept in both singles and doubles. Below are his standout results:
- SINGLES CHAMPION: Defeats Qalbani in a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
- With his singles win against Qalbani, Andy has now won 14 consecutive singles matches in straight sets.
- DOUBLES CHAMPION with partner Tyler Lee.
- Andy was the only singles champion to also capture the doubles title this year in all eight divisions.
With a phenomenal finish to the season, Andy emerges as an athlete to watch with a bright future ahead of him. Currently, Andy plays with the Solinco Whiteout with Tour Bite Diamond Rough.
