Kalamazoo Rewind: Get Up to Speed on the Most Prestigious Junior Event of the Year

The 80th edition of the USTA Boys National Hardcourts made its grand return to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Solinco returned as the sponsor for its milestone 10th year.

The road to the US Open begins at the Zoo, as 256 exceptional junior athletes hailing from around the nation battle for a coveted spot in the US Open main draw. The atmosphere was electric and the weather graced the event with fewer storms than previous years, allowing the focus to remain squarely on top-tier tennis from future pros.

This year, Team Solinco went head-to-head in a best-of-5 final match. Learner Tien and Trevor Svajda are two rising stars making waves in global competitions. Tien has been a part of Team Solinco since the age of 6 and currently plays with Tour Bite Soft. Svajda joined Team Solinco this year playing with Confidential.

Learner Tien is the 2023 USTA Boys National Hardcourts Champion in Kalamazoo

In the end, Tien successfully defended his 2022 title, outlasting Svajda in straight sets 6-0, 6-4, 6-4. He’ll see the US Open main draw for the second consecutive year. Svajda earns a wildcard into the qualifying draw.

With this win, Tien achieved a repeat win and played one of his final tournaments of his junior career. Despite being just 17 years old, Tien recently decided to forgo attending USC and instead turn Pro. Earlier this year, he clinched the boys doubles title at the 2023 Australian Open Junior Championships alongside his partner Cooper Williams. He was also a finalist in singles.

Other Team Solinco highlights include:

  • Maxim Kalinin and partner Nicholas Patrick are the B16 Doubles Champion!
  • Lachlan Gaskell took the silver ball in the B16s.
  • Kyle Kang and partner Nishesh Basavareddy took the silver ball in B18s doubles.

Team Solinco’s Jack Kennedy was recognized for his integrity on court, winning this year’s Bobby Kaplan Sportsmanship award.

Solinco’s all-star stringing team pulls expert stringers from 6 cities to offer exceptional service for players. Altogether, the team strung over 850 racquets! Hyper-G and Tour Bite remain the top string choice among junior players.
